SANAKA IIN

Sanaka Iin is a small neighborhood internal medicine clinic tucked into a residential stretch of Wakabayashi in Setagaya. This is a classic Japanese かかりつけ医 — a family GP-style setup where the same doctor sees you repeatedly and actually remembers who you are. Good for managing ongoing conditions, getting referrals, or handling the kind of general adult health stuff that doesn’t warrant a hospital visit.

The clinic has some English content on its website, which is a decent sign, but don’t walk in expecting a bilingual front desk. This is a local clinic serving a local neighborhood. If your Japanese is minimal, bring a translation app and write down your symptoms beforehand. Google Translate camera mode will handle most of the paperwork.

That said, Setagaya has a sizable expat community, and a clinic that’s made any effort toward English materials is worth knowing about. Best suited for expats who have some Japanese ability or a Japanese-speaking partner, or anyone comfortable navigating with digital translation tools.
