Matsuoka Shika
Matsuoka Shika is a general dental clinic sitting on the second floor of a building in Hongo, Bunkyo — one of Tokyo’s quieter, more residential academic neighborhoods, close to Tokyo University. It’s a standard Japanese dental practice covering the usual range: cleanings, fillings, crowns, extractions, and general checkups.
The clinic has some English content on its website, which is a decent sign, but that doesn’t automatically mean you’ll walk in and have a smooth English conversation at the front desk. Bunkyo isn’t a heavily internationalized area, so full English service isn’t guaranteed. That said, many Japanese dentists are used to working with some degree of gesture-and-pointing communication, and dental work is often more visual than verbal anyway.
If your Japanese is zero, bring a translation app and write down your symptoms beforehand. If you just need a cleaning or something straightforward, you’ll probably be fine. For complex treatment discussions, prepare more carefully.
Patient Feedback
Patient feedback points to a competent, no-fuss neighborhood dental practice. The clinic feels small and personal rather than a high-volume chain. Appointments tend to run on time, which counts for a lot in Tokyo dental care. The dentist is described as thorough without being alarmist — they explain what they’re doing as they go. Not a flashy setup, but the work gets done properly.
English Language Proficiency
For translating forms, prescriptions, or discharge summaries, Jozu is worth having on your phone.
