Kotake Eye Clinic is a neighborhood ophthalmology practice sitting in the ground floor of a small building in Setagaya’s Akatsutsu area — residential, quiet, the kind of place locals have probably been going to for years. They handle the full range of eye care: glasses and contact lens prescriptions, glaucoma checks, cataracts, dry eye, and general eye exams.

The website has some English content, which is a decent sign, but don’t assume you’ll walk in and have a smooth English conversation at the front desk. This is almost certainly a Japanese-first clinic. A translation app on your phone is your best friend here, and having your symptoms written out in Japanese beforehand will save everyone time.

That said, for routine eye care — getting a prescription updated, checking a weird floater, annual glaucoma screening — language barriers are manageable. Eye exams involve a lot of equipment-guided testing that doesn’t require much back-and-forth. If you’re dealing with something complex or need detailed post-op instructions, you may want a more English-capable clinic.
