TOKYO WOMENS MEDICAL UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospital is a major academic medical center in Shinjuku’s Kawadacho neighborhood — not a quiet neighborhood clinic, but a full-scale university hospital with serious dermatology credentials. The dermatology department handles everything from common skin conditions to complex cases that smaller clinics refer out. Because it’s a teaching hospital, you’ll likely see residents alongside attending physicians, and appointments can run long or feel rushed depending on the day.
English capability is patchy. The hospital has some English content on its website and reportedly has multilingual support staff, but dermatology specifically may not have dedicated English-speaking doctors on every shift. Come prepared with a translation app and written notes about your symptoms. Referral letters in Japanese help a lot here.
Getting there: the closest station is Wakamatsu-Kawada on the Toei Oedo Line, about a 5-minute walk. It’s also reachable from Shinjuku, but the walk is longer than Google makes it look.
Patient Feedback
Being a university hospital means thorough diagnostics — dermatology patients generally report feeling like their case was taken seriously, not just handed a prescription and shown the door. Wait times are the trade-off. Even with an appointment, 60–90 minute waits in the department aren’t unusual. The environment is clinical and busy. Doctors are knowledgeable but not always chatty, and bedside manner varies by who you get.
