Showaikadaigaku Shikabyoin
Showaikadaigaku Shikabyoin is the dental hospital attached to Showa University, sitting in Kitasenzoku in Ota Ward — a residential part of south Tokyo that most expats don’t end up in by accident. University dental hospitals in Japan operate differently from private clinics: expect a teaching environment, which means more thorough documentation, possibly a supervising professor in the room, and longer appointment times. The tradeoff is usually lower cost and access to specialists that a solo practice can’t offer.
The website has some English-language sections, but that doesn’t mean the front desk is staffed for English-speaking patients. This is a Japanese-primary institution. If you’re not conversational in Japanese, bring a translation app or a Japanese-speaking friend for anything beyond the basics. That said, university hospitals tend to attract more internationally experienced staff than neighborhood clinics, so you may get lucky.
Good option if you need specialist-level dental care — oral surgery, complex restorations, orthodontics — and you’re willing to navigate some language friction to get it.
Patient Feedback
University dental hospitals in Japan tend to run slower than private clinics — multiple staff involved, detailed charting, sometimes a wait while a senior dentist reviews your case. Patients generally report thorough care and lower fees than private practices. The clinical environment is more institutional than cozy. Don’t expect a quick cleaning appointment; expect a proper workup. For complex dental issues, that thoroughness is actually the point.
