Showaikadaigaku Shikabyoin
Showaikadaigaku Shikabyoin is the dental hospital attached to Showa University, sitting in the residential Kita-senzoku area of Ota Ward. Being a university hospital means you’re getting dental students doing some of the work — always supervised, but expect appointments to run longer than at a private clinic. The upside: equipment is solid, specialists are on-site, and complex cases get handled here that a small neighborhood dentist would refer out anyway.
English is a gray area. The main university website has some English content, but that doesn’t mean the front desk will speak it fluently. Walk-ins with zero Japanese may struggle. Bring a translation app and have your insurance card and personal details written out in Japanese if you can. That said, academic hospitals often have more international exposure than average, so you might get lucky with a staff member who studied abroad.
Good option if you need something beyond a basic cleaning and want the backing of a full hospital system. Not the place for a quick, breezy appointment.
Patient Feedback
University dental hospitals in Japan move at their own pace — thorough, methodical, sometimes slow. Expect multiple short appointments rather than getting everything done in one visit. Students may do initial work under supervision, which can feel odd at first but is standard here. The equipment and diagnostic capability are strong. Patients with complicated dental needs tend to appreciate the depth of care. Don’t come here in a hurry.
