NIPPON MEDICAL SCHOOL HOSPITAL
Nippon Medical School Hospital is a major university teaching hospital in Bunkyo, tucked into the quiet residential streets of Sendagi. The dermatology department sits within a full-service academic medical center, so you’re getting specialist-level care backed by research and residents — not a standalone skin clinic. That means it can handle complex cases that a neighborhood dermatologist might punt on: chronic conditions, unusual presentations, things that haven’t responded to first-line treatment.
The tradeoff is the university hospital experience: longer waits, more bureaucracy, and a system built around Japanese-speaking patients. The website has some English content, but don’t expect a smooth English-language intake process. Come prepared — bring a bilingual friend, use a translation app, or at minimum write down your symptoms and medication history in Japanese beforehand. Staff are professional but the English support is inconsistent at best.
If you have a referral letter from another clinic, bring it. University hospitals here prioritize紹介状 (shōkaijō), and it’ll save you time and a surcharge.
Patient Feedback
Patients generally report competent, thorough dermatology care — doctors take time with diagnoses and aren’t quick to dismiss symptoms. The wait times are a real issue though; expect 1–2 hours even with an appointment, which is standard for university hospitals in Japan. The atmosphere is clinical and efficient rather than warm. Staff are professional but interactions are task-focused. Not the place for hand-holding, but if you need answers on a stubborn skin issue, the diagnostic depth is genuinely there.
